Palm oil purifiers

Palm oil purifiers are widely used for the purification of palm oil. From the oil tank the oil is fed into the purifier where impurities and water are removed. The purified oil passes through a vacuum dryer and is finally pumped through an oil cooler into the main storage tank.

The PASB purifier is a solid jet disc stack centrifuge. The rotating bowl is driven by an electric motor via a flat belt or worm gear. When the feed is closed, the oil is discharged by adding repellent water and adding discharge water to release the hydraulic closing force and lower the sliding bowl bottom. After the discharge cycle, a new water seal is established in the bowl and separation continues. The oil enters the purifier via an external pump. The operating water table and the complete hydraulic system controlling the sludge discharge are located in the water tank. There is no possibility of contamination from external sources.

Working principle

The separator is designed to partially discharge the separated sludge, which means that there is minimal oil loss. The drive system is belt driven or worm gear driven.

The feed system is via an external pump system. There is no need for an operating water tank as the purifier requires high pressure water, this is achieved by an external pump which only runs during the discharge cycle. The discharge must be at regular intervals of 15 – 20 minutes, with each discharge cycle lasting a few seconds. The discharge system is fully automatic and is equipped with a manual override system.

 

Separation takes place inside the rotating bowl. The tee is introduced through a fixed inlet pipe from the top into the rotating centrifugal bowl and accelerated in the distributor before entering the disc stack. Liquid-liquid-solid separation takes place between the discs, with the oil phase moving through the disc stack to the centre where it is discharged via a stationary centripetal pump. The water and solids separated from the oil flow to the periphery, where the water enters the cooling chamber through a channel in the top disc, where it exits the centrifuge through a hole in the bowl cover. The solids are collected at the periphery of the bowl from where they are discharged intermittently. Solids discharge is achieved by a hydraulic system which forces the sliding piston to bend downwards at pre-determined appropriate intervals, thereby opening the solids ports around the bowl.
